Combustion process monitor

Description

Monitor of the combustion process based on the rotational speed of the crankshaft in the Honda 1.4l engine. The scope of work included the selection of appropriate boundary parameters conditioning the operation of the monitor, the selection of the appropriate decision-making strategy defining the behavior of the system depending on the collected data, and the physical construction of the device and its further implementation. An important aspect of the work was to create a clear signaling of possible errors and to display important information, such as the current rotational speed of the engine shaft and the status of the monitor. The combustion process monitor was made using an Arduino microcontroller, a Hall sensor and other necessary electronic components. The project has been completed and is still operating today at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the Cracow University of Technology.

Background

The project was made as part of an engineering thesis during my studies in the field of Automation and Robotics at the Cracow University of Technology.

Process

1. Project
  • Ideational project with key assumptions, functionalities and requirements
  • Selection of components and technologies
  • Electrical and electronic diagram
  • BOM preparation
2. Execution
  • Ordering components in accordance with the prepared BOM list
  • Controller construction - electrical and electronic fabrication
  • Software development - Arduino (C++)
  • Assembly of the system on the test object, i.e. Honda 1.4l combustion engine
  • Startup and tests
  • Software Corrections
3. Documentation
  • Description of tests results
  • Preparation of the final documentation of the device along with the user's manual
  • Presentation of the completed project during the defense of the title of engineer at the Cracow University of Technology

Conclusion

The combustion process monitor based on the rotational speed of the Honda 1.4l engine shaft has been physically made and works. The system still serves as a scientific research station at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the Cracow University of Technology.
